Comprehension in July

ESY… summer school… extended school year… no matter what you call it, it’s all about supporting your students all summer long!

Summer school can be tough for everyone. Teachers moving classrooms/ schools, students coming different hours, things packed away, different staff, hot classrooms… there are so many variables. One BIG fact to remember is that your students are there for a reason… to continue with consistency is KEY. Do not make it all fluff… practice what they know and keep them learning on a schedule.

Simple Comprehension for July is all about topics that will help spark conversation and support your students during the Summer.

This July, students will work on the vocabulary they are living during the summer. From cookouts to fireworks, beaches to zoos, you will continue to work on your students comprehension, sequencing, and vocabulary, but also be able to touch on home life and social skills through these differentiated stories.

Read more tips about Simple Comprehension here.

When you work on comprehension and sequencing, the stories don’t have to be boring. While many of our students are working at a simplified level… you can teach level 3 to the whole group… then break down into groups to assess students further.

You can read more about groups for simple comprehension here.

Do you go on any field trips with your students during summer school? The zoo is a great summer trip! Prepare your students with the zoo story and work on zoo vocabulary with clip cards! This fun fine motor activity can be worked on with a variety of materials and at a variety of leveled support.

While simple comprehension may LOOK like it takes a while to prep… there actually isn’t alot to it! A lot of the resources are print and go… and if you choose to laminate… you will have the materials for years to come, which makes your life easier!

Summer is a great time to get started! Try out July, and see if it is a curriculum that is doable for your students all year long!
