Simple comprehension October is here! This is my favorite month of stories yet! We have everything from pumpkins to spooky vibes- perfect to get into the spirit!
I LOVE the holidays but it’s easy to fall victim to TOO MANY holiday activities. Our students need consistency. So sticking with your normal routine is best for behavior and independence. But of course we want to talk about seasons and holidays too- picking curriculums that touch on these topics allow you to teach them without stumbling away from routine.
Teaching vocabulary that goes along with monthly themes is another way to stay on track. Each month I try to include vocabulary that your students will hear at home, see in read alouds, and TOUCH in their environment. I base my stories around these vocabulary lists! If you increase vocabulary then comprehension will improve almost instantly! Make sure you have a good method for introducing and reviewing vocabulary.
What if I can’t celebrate Halloween?
This is the beauty of simple comprehension! There are four stories a month, and each month contains non seasonal stories in addition to seasonal ones. This also means that some months you might not make it though 4 stories, and then you have some leftover. If a month includes a topic you do not want to teach, reach into your reserves! (example: this month has a story about a pumpkin, spider, and getting healthy. There is only one Halloween story!
