Comprehension groups are a great way to target multiple skills and levels at the same time. With the right resources and organization, they are easy to put together and replicate each month. Here is a look inside April Comprehension Groups.
Organizing comprehension groups seems like a lofty task. But the reality is, once you have the right resources for the job… the hardest part is teaching your students the routine, after about a month of practice this routine will be down pat!
ORGANIZE KIDS BY SKILL LEVEL
I prefer to put kids in group based on skill levels. Not always perfect, some groups may be bigger than others… and that is OKAY. Just stick with it… grouping your kids helps you target their needs easier.
DOWNLOAD THE FREE VISUAL
Next set up the group visual. I have a free visual for centers that you can use here! I put kids in simple color groups and label each table center by color. This keeps it easy for everyone to know where to go. The simpler the better!
GET YOUR BINDERS ORGANIZED
I like to have a binder for each student. Each month I change out the stories, and send home that month’s stories to practice. I DON’T recommend printing all the stories for the year at once and organizing by student… why? Because your students WILL improve and need higher levels (I promise!) 🙂 Find out how to organize your binders and set them up here!
DECIDE ON QUIZ LEVELS
Your students may read at one level but need a quiz at a different level. The first time you use simple comprehension you can probe with multiple levels all week to find out what works best!Then print your levels in the order you will complete everything all week *YOU decide the stories you will use and the order it goes in, though there is a suggested schedule included with the monthly packs, you may even have leftover stories because of vacations, etc.!*
START THAT GROUP
Yes, it’s overwhelming starting a new routine. (EVEN for us ADULTS) but focusing on reading, comprehension, sequencing, and vocabulary ALL AT ONCE is so helpful! It crosses off so many things on your list in one 15-30 minute session a day!
