Lesson Planning with Simple Comprehension

Creating lesson plans for your self-contained classroom can be a challenge. Trying to include work for multiple grades and ability levels gives teachers a lot to manage! Luckily, I have found easy ways to streamline my planning. Enter Simple Comprehension! Using these stories makes my reading lesson plans a breeze. That’s because they are already made for me! In each Simple Comprehension set, you will find a story for each week of the month. Then, each story has vocabulary and comprehension activities for each school day! This ready-made work makes it simple to plan reading centers because everything I need is at my fingertips.
What is in the November Simple Comprehension Set?

Every Simple Comprehension set comes with the same materials. The set includes four stories, one for each school week in the month!
The November stories are Thanksgiving Feast, Community Helpers, Let’s Talk About Weather, and Larry Loves Leaves. Pro tip: I like to mix and match my stories to match what I am teaching in class. Sometimes I even swap in stories form different months! For example, if I am planning to teach a science unit on weather in January, I will save the “Let’s Talk About Weather” story for that time, and sub in a different one for that week.

Each story comes with five activities (one for each day of the school week!). And, each activity has three levels to meet your students’ needs. In addition to the story, the other activities include vocabulary, sequencing, review, and a quiz.
Also included in the set are a note to parents, data sheets for tracking student progress, and materials to organize student and teacher reading binders.
Your November Reading Plans – Done!

When I am lesson planning, I use a simple template that shows what we are doing in each subject on each day of the week, with unit names at the top and standards at the bottom. Each week I plug in the different topics we will cover in each subject. I also highlight special activities for the class, such as music therapy or school assemblies.
During our reading block, my students work one of the Simple Comprehension stories and its related activities each week. Because the activities for each story are the same every week, all I have to do to lesson plan is change the title of the story. The daily lessons are always the same! (In addition to the comprehension work, my students also complete either Edmark reading lessons or phonics work. On my plans, I just plug in those lessons/topics as needed.)

The best part about Simple Comprehension is that once you and your students get into the reading center routine, you can repeat it month after month with new stories! It’s a win for you AND your students!
