Adapted School Playgrounds are one of my favorite things! My elementary school is an urban school nestled in a little neighborhood. It’s 100% adorable. Our school works very hard to be inclusive in all areas. One of the most important areas is the playground! Come with me as we tour the adapted school playground.
Shake and Sway
A fan favorite for all students is the Shake and Sway boat. It’s wheelchair accessible so that all students can play together. Have you ever been on one of these? Some students ride while some students push the boat. I often volunteer for pushing duty.
Big Toy
Our big toy is accessible. It has a ramp for easy access and using the ramp you can access about 75% of the big toy (there is an area only accessible by climbing through a tube or using a ladder). It includes a panel with the alphabet in sign language and in braille.
Adapted Swings
We have red swings with safety belts (the safety belts are not attached in this picture. I took it on a Sunday). These swings are amazing! They help our students that are not able to use a traditional swing have an opportunity to join their friends on the playground.
Play House
The playhouse has small ramps on the entrance and exit. It is spacious enough for a wheelchair to maneuver so that everyone can play pretend together. It’s one of the most popular spots on the playground.
Wheelchair Swing
This is one of the most exciting parts of the playground. It’s positioned right between two set of swings so that no one is swinging alone. It accommodates all wheelchairs, is adjustable, and is a pretty fun and neat addition to our playground. We use this swing everyday. My students always pick this first.
I hope you enjoyed taking a look at our fun adapted school playground! It’s been a labor of love for our school and we are always working to add more and make it better. Do you have an adapted playground at your school? Show us your pictures!
