The FIRST Thing You Should Do as a New Special Education Teacher

What’s the FIRST thing you should do as a new special education teacher? Read this post to find out!

Being a new special education teacher can be overwhelming and stressful. It’s not uncommon for special education teachers to feel extra anxious facing their first year of teaching. They have additional and unique responsibilities to complete in order to have a successful year. There are many things to check off the list. Here is the FIRST thing to do as a new special ed teacher.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO FIRST AS A NEW SPECIAL ED TEACHER?

The first thing you need to worry about as a new special education teacher is getting organized. This means getting ALL of your systems for the year in place. Trust me, if you do it NOW-it will make for a much smoother school year!

WHAT SYSTEMS DO I NEED IN PLACE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION?

There are a lot of things to plan for once you are given the keys to your own classroom:

  • Classroom Set Up
  • Organizing IEPs
  • Behavior Management
  • Planning your Schedule
  • Managing your staff
  • Daily Communication
  • Visual Schedules
  • Curriculum
  • Independent work

I could probably go on and on but these some definite things that you want to have systems in place for BEFORE the school year begins.

WANT HELP GETTING YOUR SYSTEMS IN PLACE?

Are you overwhelmed by all of the many steps you need to take before your students walk in? Simple Self-Contained Set Up 101 was created solely to help with this. Don’t make the same mistakes that I did during my first year of teaching. Let me show you how to rock your first year of teaching with confidence.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Simple Self-Contained Set Up 101 is geared toward brand new self-contained teachers, teachers new to the self-contained setting and veteran self-contained teachers looking for more support in the classroom setup process.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE INCLUDE?

Simple Self-Contained Set Up is made up of 6 modules:

  1. The Schedules
  2. The Team (Check out the Paraprofessional Binder to help train your staff!)
  3. The Classroom
  4. The Curriculum
  5. The Changes
  6. The Celebration!

Within the modules there are videos, action items, downloadable resources and recommended resources. Oh and did I mention that the training videos are UNDER 5 minutes each?!

In addition to this, there is an EXCLUSIVE Facebook group for members only. This is a community of other teachers in self-contained special education. This group is a great place to post questions, pictures of your classroom, resources and so much more!

Finally, the course also includes a LIVE Q & A session a few times throughout! This gives you the opportunity to ask any burning questions as a new special education teacher.

SEE WHAT OTHER SPECIAL EDUCATORS ARE SAYING ABOUT SIMPLE SELF-CONTAINED SET-UP 101:

Mary

“Before I started this course, I felt like OH MY GOSH I am the only brand new teacher who has never set up a classroom and doesn’t know what she’s going to teach and is totally lost (dramatic, right? 🤣) It has been awesome to be able to connect with educators who are in the same boat as me, or at one time was. The tidbits of advice I’ve gotten from chatting in the comments has been so helpful! I am feeling more confident going into the school year. There are still a lot of unknowns for me, but it is a big win that I will know what to do with those unknowns once they become known!”

Lacey

“This is my 4th year teaching and I always have lots of anxiety going back to school, even though I’ve done this before. I felt like every year I was changing things, trying to get it just right. I’ve never felt more prepared, focused, and ready to lead my team than I do now. This course has really broken everything down, almost like a task analysis, and eliminated the stress for me.”

Sabida

“I’m getting ready for summer school to start next week. This will be my first year of teaching self contained. When I finished setting up my room, arranging furniture, making copies, and hanging my wall schedules, I looked around I felt so confident! I feel like because of this course and group I know what to do on day one with my students. I am excited and ready to get started, and I feel that without this course I would still be drowning right now.”

Valerie

”My biggest transformation would have to be feeling less anxious and stressed and now feeling more at ease and prepared for a brand new year as a first year teacher. The resources and how to use them were helpful.”

Grace

“My biggest transformation was with my mindset and my stress level. I feel that I will be a better leader and be able to handle stress more effectively now that I’ve got some tools under my belt.”
