Organization Tips for SLPs

Header for organization tips for SLPs

Preparing for the school year can be tough, but organization tips can help! As SLPs, we have large caseloads that can feel overwhelming at times. Getting organized is an important step to starting the year off strong. Here are some organization tips for SLPs.

Examples of organized IEP and MDT tracking sheets
IEP and MDT schedules help me stay organized. I make sure to include the case manager since they coordinate most of the meetings.

LISTS

Make a list of the IEP and MDT due dates you have for the upcoming year. I make my own document, but you can download the ultimate IEP binder here. This document stays in my data binder so it is easily accessible throughout the year. Referencing this list helps me keep track of paperwork, complete assessments on time, and keeps me as organized as possible.

SLP Toolkit creates student profiles that include IEP and MDT dates as well as service time and goals. You can even keep track of progress and see graphs on each student profile.

UPDATES

I try to make as many updates to student profiles over summer as possible so I do not have to stress about it once the school year starts. My district uses SLP Toolkit to track student goals, data, and schedules. This website does my organizing for me! Over the summer, I make sure each student’s profile is updated with current IEP dates and goals.

Starting your schedule early takes some of the stress out of the first few weeks of school. Use whatever organization or scheduling system works best for you!

SCHEDULES

Scheduling is arguably the most challenging part of the start of the school year. SLP Toolkit has been a lifesaver when making my schedule. This simple schedule template has been great as well! I always start by adding inflexible times (e.g., classroom support time, kiddos who require strict routine, building travel time) and build around those times. The summer is a great time to try building a “base schedule” so you are less stressed once school starts.

TAKE A BREAK

In order to get organized and be the best SLP you can be, rest up! Take a break and relax for a moment this summer. My best organization ideas come from a fresh mind and positive outlook. Giving yourself a beak can set you up for success before tackling a big organization project.
