WH Flip Cards: Why they work!

WH Flip Cards-why do they work and what are they exactly? Well they are one of my best-selling resources! If you don’t have them yet, let’s talk about why they are so great!

What are WH Flip Cards?

These bestselling WH question flip cards include over 100 flip cards in 3 differentiated levels! They are simply flip cards to get your special education students working on simple WH questions!

All questions begin with:

– What

– Who

– When

– Where

– Why

All WH questions have 3 answers per card and students need to choose the best answer.

Why work on WH questions?

Who, what, where, when and why questions are usually difficult for any students with language deficits to ask and understand. “Why” questions are especially more difficult because there is not a concrete answer to give. When I was a self-contained special education teacher, almost all of my students had IEP goals for asking and answering WH questions. I had difficulty finding resources and activities to practice this skill with them, hence how WH Flip Cards were born!

I love that once WH Flip Cards are printed and laminated-they are ready to go for the ENTIRE YEAR! You never have to get anything ready for them again! You can organize them by type of question and keep them in a bin for staff to use with students when needed throughout the year. Start simple with WHO questions and then move on to WHAT questions and so on once they have mastered one area.

How to use WH Flip Cards

WH Flip Cards are SO easy to prep and use in your classroom, office or even at home! Just print, laminate, cut, add a binder ring and you are ready to go! WH Flip cards are perfect for SLPs, early childhood, home services, autism classrooms, elementary students, middle school students and more!

Check out this video preview of how to use them! You can have students point to the answer, use a clothespin, paperclip or even a dry erase marker! WH Flip Cards can be easily adjusted according to the student’s needs.

Some ideas:

  • Put in a center with a paraprofessional
  • Use during morning meeting time
  • Use during transition periods throughout the day
  • Ask 3 WH questions from the flip cards to earn a break after
  • Use while students are in line
  • Use at the end of day during dismissal line
  • Send extra sets home for parents to practice
  • Have paraprofessionals carry throughout the building for transition activities in general education time
  • Ask WH questions during the bathroom line
  • Have a race between 2 students at the board-set a timer for 1 minutes and see who can answer the most questions in that time!

((Here are 3 ways to target WH questions, if you need more help with that!))

Differentiation in WH Flip Cards

All of your learners may be working on the skill of answering WH questions but you can differentiate the way that you use WH Flip Cards!

There are 3 different levels of differentiation:

  1. Picture
  2. Picture and word
  3. Just the word

Don’t forget that since there are over 100 flip cards, your learners should not get bored of the same question over and over again! Another way to differentiate these and add them into curriculum such as writing would be to have them keep a notebook and write their answer down instead of just pointing to it. To increase the difficulty level when needed, don’t show students the answers and have them come up with an answer without choices. (This is a much higher level skill).

Here’s what other teachers are saying about WH Question Flip Cards:

Mandy T. said: “One of the best things I have purchased from TpTs. Much more comprehension than I thought when I bought it. So many pages of wh questions. Can’t wait to laminate and use!”

Kristina T. said: “I love this product! I use it ALL THE TIME either for therapy, progress monitoring, informal assessment, etc.. Thank you! “

Lindsey M. said: “Very well made product that was perfect for my students who needed more visual support for WH questions. I love that there are different levels of support.”
