10 Ways to Promote Learning through Play

10 Ways to Promote Learning through Play

Are you an Early Childhood Teacher or Preschool Special Education Teacher? Maybe a parent looking for play based ideas? Well, look no further! Promoting learning through play is an effective and enjoyable way to enhance educational experiences. Here are ten strategies to encourage learning through play:

1.Provide open-ended materials

Offer a variety of toys, building blocks, art supplies , and other open-ended materials that allow students to explore and create freely. This fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and imagination. Teacher tip: simple is usually best. Think recyclable items, creating a fort with blankets, building with sticks found in your yard and/or painting with your hands!

2. Incorporate sensory play

Sensory play engages multiple senses and promotes cognitive development. Offer opportunities for Students to play with water, sensory bins, sand, play-dough, or other textured materials that stimulate their senses and encourage exploration. A big hit in my classroom is the water table and sand table! Click here to learn more about sensory bins in an Early Childhood Special Education class that can be applied to all classroom settings.

3. Encourage role-playing and pretend play

Role-playing allows children to experiment with different roles and scenarios. Provide props, dress-up clothes, play sets and visuals to support imaginative play and help children develop social and emotional skills. I notice that during pretend play is when I’m able to easily teach social skills in a natural environment and when students are more likely to play with others.

4. Introduce educational games

Incorporating educational games that combine learning and play is essential. These can be board games, puzzles, or interactive digital games that focus on various subjects like math, language, or science. A popular one we use, is the Building Language Lotto.

5. Create learning centers or stations

Set up different learning centers or stations in the classroom or at home. Each center can focus on a particular theme or subject, such as a science corner, a reading nook, an art station, or a math area. This encourages students to explore different topics through hands-on activities and keeps them engaged longer.

6. Foster collaborative play

Encourage children to engage in cooperative play by working together on projects or playing group games. Collaboration helps develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Some ideas are hopscotch, duck, duck, goose or playing with blocks to create something together.

7. Incorporate technology and educational apps

As we know, technology time is always a hit with students. Utilize age-appropriate educational apps, interactive websites, or digital tools that offer educational content in a playful manner. These resources can reinforce various skills and knowledge areas while engaging students in technology-based learning.

8. Engage in outdoor play and nature exploration

Encourage outdoor play and exploration of the natural environment. This provides opportunities for hands-on learning about the natural world, promotes physical activity, and  enhances sensory experiences. Students enjoy tools that encourage explorations such as binoculars and a magnifying glass.

9. Support hands-on experiments and investigations

Foster a love for science and inquiry by providing materials for hands-on experiments and investigations. Encourage students to ask questions, make predictions, and explore concepts through trial and error. When provided with visuals and tools, I notice students all students thrive off of hands on experiments.

10. Encourage storytelling and creative writing

Promote storytelling and creative writing activities to enhance language skills and imagination. Provide writing materials, storybooks, and props to inspire students to create their own narratives and develop their literacy abilities. Teacher tip: Always keep a journal or a clipboard with paper near by to encourage writing and drawing.

Remember, students learn best when they are actively engaged and having fun. By incorporating these strategies, you can create a rich and stimulating learning environment that combines play and education effectively.
