How to plan for a community outing with your multiple disabilities classroom

How to plan for a community outing with your multiple disabilities classroom

Planning a community outing with a multiple disabilities classroom can be challenging, but it can also be a rewarding experience for both you and your students. Here are some steps you can take to plan a successful outing when considering how to plan for a community outing with your multiple disabilities classroom.

Choose an appropriate location

Consider the accessibility of the location for your students with disabilities. Make sure it is safe and can accommodate the needs of all students. For example, if you have students in wheelchairs, ensure that the location has ramps, elevators, and accessible bathrooms. Two weeks ago I took students to our local science museum with their class. I called and asked if they had an accessible bathroom and wheelchair supports before the trip was finalized.

Our local science museum has a universal bathroom and this wonderful motorized changing table.

Plan the logistics

Consider transportation, supervision, and communication needs. Make sure you have enough staff to accompany the students, and that you have a plan for communicating with each other in case of an emergency. We may need a lift bus or to stow equipment such as a walker on the bus. It’s important to make sure it has enough room. You also may want to make sure the students communication device is programmed with necessary topics for the trip.

Prepare your students

Talk to your students about the outing and what to expect. Provide visuals and social stories to help them understand the schedule and rules of the location. Make sure they have appropriate clothing and equipment for the outing. I use Lessonpix to make social stories. However, I also use some of the stories that come with the First Ten Days kit. The stories that emphasize riding the bus and procedures are great refreshers before trips. Whitney writes about it here.

Schedule the outing

Choose a date and time that works for all students and staff involved. Consider the weather and any potential conflicts that may arise. Have a plan if the trip has to be cancelled due to weather.

calendar
I create a calendar each month and add all of our activities to it. I send it home and put it on our digital communications.

Prepare for emergencies

Have a plan in case of an emergency, such as a medical emergency or a student wandering off. Make sure all staff members are aware of the plan and know their roles. I have the big red emergency binder. I take it with me everywhere. It has all of the students information and health plans.

Have fun

Enjoy the outing with your students and celebrate their successes. Take pictures and share them with parents and caregivers.

Remember, the most important thing is to ensure the safety and well-being of your students. With proper planning and preparation, you can create a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved. I hope this helps you consider ways you can begin to think about how to plan for a community outing with your multiple disabilities classroom.
