One thing that we don’t learn in our teacher preparation programs is how to work with the paraprofessionals in our classrooms. It can be intimidating to figure out how to manage other adults. But, developing a positive relationship with the paraprofessionals in your classroom is essential to making your classroom a peaceful, positive, and productive place. (That’s a mantra I learned from a para years ago!) Keep reading for some ideas about how to support paras!
Make Paraprofessionals Feel Welcome
I want paras to feel comfortable in my classroom. I provide them with a dedicated desk or work area, and a place to store their belongings. (Depending on your school district’s policies, this may actually be a contractual requirement.) I also show them where important supplies can be found, and let them know that they are free to get what they need. That may seem like a small gesture, but it makes people feel more comfortable when they can help themselves instead of having to ask for every little thing.
Provide Paraprofessional Training
No one likes to walk into a job blindly! On the first day that I work with a new staff member, I provide them with a paraprofessional binder and go over all of my routines and expectations. Keeping everyone informed of the classroom expectations is so important for making sure that the classroom runs smoothly!
If you have the opportunity, holding a weekly or monthly meeting with paraprofessionals to train on important topics is beneficial for everyone. Spending that time together also helps to build camaraderie among everyone!
Work as a Team in the Classroom
One of the biggest ways you can support paraprofessionals is by having their backs! It is important that you and the paraprofessionals you work with are on the same page about rewards, consequences, and other issues. Present a united front to students so that they know there is consistency no matter what adult they are working with. Believe me, students definitely notice the difference when staff members work together as a team!
Additionally, including paraprofessionals in decisions about the classroom is both thoughtful and helpful! You want everyone to be on board with changes that you are making. Everyone can always benefit from an outside perspective on things. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Treat Them!
Everyone likes to be rewarded for a job well done! We do it for our students, so why not our colleagues as well? Surprising paraprofessionals with a treat or a handwritten note means so much. It also lets them know how much they mean to you and your students. This free para favorites survey is great to hand out at the beginning of the school year to help you surprise your staff all year long. These free appreciation cards are also a sweet gesture. Advocate for Paraprofessionals
Supporting paraprofessionals can also mean advocating for their rights! Unfortunately, paras are not always compensated with a living wage and/or benefits. When negotiations arise, teachers can advocate for fair contract language and employment practices for paraprofessionals. You can also help behind the scenes by supporting causes and legislation that impact paras.
