There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey: A Free Adapted Text

Creating adapting texts can be time consuming – so I am excited to bring you this free adapted text for “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Turkey!” by: Lucille Colandro.  Make sure you check out other free resources here!

Adapted texts are a great way to get nonverbal students, low level readers, and visual learners interacting with the text.

Here are some tips for using adapted texts in the classroom:

  1. Read the story aloud on a projector, have students come to the board to point word by word and follow along.
  2. Use the book 1:1, have the student use the picture prompts to read the text.
  3. Ask basic WH questions along the way
  4. Use the arrows as helpful page turners for students who have fine motor difficulties.
  5. Have fun with it! Pair it with a craft, a video, or a sensory activity!
