February Vocabulary in the Classroom

I am so excited to share my favorite ways to vocabulary words in the classroom this February! Vocabulary is SO important for our students, and I LOVE using monthly vocabulary words… why? Because we see these words EVERYWHERE throughout the month! In our work, around the school, in themed lessons, and in our read alouds.

I suggest that you always keep your monthly vocabulary words displayed on a board for exposure. You can use the word wall strips or the square vocabulary cards included in the February Unit for this purpose. Students can look at the words for their writing activities, refer to them during lessons and books, and just have general exposure to them throughout the day. The staff in the classroom can use them too! Point to the word on the board when you use it in everyday language. Refer students to the board if they ask for help with spelling. This gets everyone in the room interacting with the word wall and monthly vocabulary words.

In the beginning of the month, review all of your new words. You can use the vocabulary cards for picture ID, a matching game, bingo cards, write the room, at a writing center and so many more activities! They are super versatile and have many uses! (I would love to hear new ways you are using them in the comments!)

Students can use the binder pages (or file folders, up to you how you prep them!) for their daily center work, or at an independent center. Students match the picture to the picture OR the picture to the word, depending on their level.

You can make two separate binders or just store the two versions of responses so you can quickly adapt for each student.

There are also fun activities included in this Vocabulary Unit (grab it here)! Bingo pages and quiz pages to check for understanding at the end of the month!

Here are the materials you will need to prep this resource:

Here are some of my favorite Valentine’s Day Books to pair with these words!
