If you have been following me long, you know that it is my passion for students to have access to an independent work library. You can read all about setting one up here.

Independent work libraries are a HUGE part of helping your students become independent learners and creating a classroom environment that runs smoothly. It’s a win win for everyone because students are becoming more independent and teachers are freed up!

Sorting activities are my GO TO. They are quick and easy to prep and have SO many skills built in!
What else? They are so easy to differentiate! For a more advanced student, you can have them use both mats and start with nothing on the mats.
For a student who cannot yet read, you can start with one visual prompt on each mat. How? Just leave one piece on each- simple!
For a student who needs errorless tasks- just give one mat at a time.
For a student who can only sustain attention for a minute or two. Start with the board half full so they do not become frustrated.
For a student with fine motor difficulties- the larger the velcro pieces the easier to attach to the mat.

HOW TO COLLECT DATA:
Use data sheets to track student task box data! Using these sheets can track student independence, start and end times, student bins (which they are able to complete) and needs for prompting.

Structured work systems take a little bit of work to set up, but the end results are so worth it!
