How To: Communication on the Go

Getting Started

Get started by downloading Communication on the Go Bundle by Simply Special Ed at the Simply Special Ed Shop or on Teachers Pay Teachers. Once you’ve downloaded the file, print and laminate the material. The bundles are diverse. They can be used as is or, use the powerpoint version to edit them. Use a keyring to take them with you, or tape them to convenient surfaces throughout the classroom or home. This bundle is designed to be used in whatever way works best for you.

On the Go

Once the boards are laminated; hole punch and connect multiple boards together with a ring. I put the “I want”, “I need”, and “I feel” boards together for easy access with the most used words. Remember, with the option to edit the boards you can change the pictures to reflect the needs of any specific child. When using the boards this way, the child can simply point to the picture that she wants to communicate.

On the Go with Velcro

Cut out the squares and use velcro dots to create a choice board. The child can simply move one picture from the choices to the blank “I want”, “I feel”, “I need” boards. It’s also nice to use velcro dots for class or home schedules. Pictured below is one that would stay put on the fridge, as well as, one on a keyring to take on the go.

Stay Put Routines

These boards can be used for routines. Tape boards in easy to see places to reinforce steps for routines, allowing the child to become more independent during familiar routines. In this pictured example the routine is taped to the bathroom mirror. The board stays put so that the child always knows where to look for the steps.

This communication bundle includes boards for at home, at school, and anywhere! It can be used with the child by school staff or family. If you would like more resources for the classroom, click here for more resource recommendations.
