How to Prep IEP Goal Bins for Back to School

Special education teachers need to take data on their students’ goals and objectives. The easiest way to do this? IEP Goal Bins! Read on to learn all about how to make and use these bins to simplify your progress monitoring!

What are IEP Goal Bins?

A clear plastic bin is open on a table. On the lid is a list of goals. Inside the bin are plastic baggies filled with materials.
Goal bins contain everything you need for a student’s progress monitoring!

An IEP Goal Bin contains everything you need to take data on student goals! Each bin contains a list of student goals and the instructions for collecting data; materials for taking data on goals; and your student data sheets. Everything you need for progress monitoring is in one convenient spot!

What to Include In Your Bins

Plastic baggies with goal materials are on a table. Each baggie has a color-coded objective written on it.
Goal bins keep all the materials you need to progress monitor organized.

Inside each goal bin you will include a list of goals and all the materials needed to progress monitor them.

Start by making a list of the student’s IEP goals that you are responsible for, organized by subject area (such as reading writing, math, social/emotional).

Then, for each goal you will place the materials needed for progress monitoring into baggies. Label the baggies with the subject and monitoring instructions.

A printed goal data sheet is on a table. The goals are typed in red and blue.
You can color-code data sheets to correspond with goal materials!

Additionally, you will need data sheets for each student. I use Simple Data Sheets and fill out separate pages for each subject area.

Putting it All Together

An IEP Goal bin is spread out on a table. THe clear pastic bin is shown with data sheets and bags of materials.
Goal bins keep everything you need for data taking close at hand!

For each goal bin, I place the information sheet on the lid of the bin. The labeled goal-tracking materials go inside. Data sheets go in a data folder or on a clipboard and are stored near the bins. And then we are ready to go!

How to Use Goal Bins

An IEP Goal Bin is shown on a shelf, with a data clipboard on top.
Store data sheets with your bins.

I take data on IEP goals weekly, during our center rotations. When a student comes to my table, I am able to grab their bin, choose a goal, and take data. It’s so simple! This free progress monitoring schedule helps me to keep track of each of my students’ goals so that I am sure to hit them all.
