How to Use: Digital File Folders

YES! Digital file folders are now a thing. I created some digital file folders that can be used with Google Slides™ and assigned with Google Classroom™. Learn more about how to use Digital File Folders in this blog post!

Why Digital?

File folders are a FAVORITE in just about every special education classroom. I love that you can find one on pretty much every skill and that they last FOREVER! (seriously, my Mom had some that were like 25 years old in perfect condition!) but the prep work that goes into them is a heavy load! Digital File Folders reduce that heavy prep work.

Digital file folders also allow for an easy transitions if schools were using a hybrid or distance learning model. If students are familiar with file folders in the classroom, they can be assigned the same folders digitally.

How to use Digital File Folders:

When you receive a Google Slides™ download from me, you will open this PDF, it will always look the same!

You will click the link to make a copy of the file to your own Google Drive™.

I also include the file folders by topic so you can assign them more easily. This way you don’t have to edit to choose which to assign each day (though that would work too, just may be more tedious).

Once you decide on what level to assign a student, you can delete the other slides and rename the file by the students initials or date of assignment. This will help you find the assignment when you go to assign.

In Google Classroom, you can assign the digital file folders. I include directions on how to do this in my directions PDF.

You can give extra directions or notes to the students here.

Create assignments ahead of time too! Assign one different digital file folder a week for 8 week, and set that all up ahead of time so that your workload is lighter.

You could also assign to the whole class at once. You would want each student to make a copy to edit if you do it this way.

This is what it looks like when you schedule assignments and create due dates for them.

FAQS about DIGITAL FILE FOLDERS

Can I assign for an ongoing period of time?

You can assign the file folders as much or often as you care to using the google classroom assignment tool.

Do they collect data?

Because the pieces will need to be reset after use (or assigned a fresh set) you can check the students work, and take data on it if you please.

Do I need to reset?

If you keep the file folders assigned for daily use, you can check the students file each day, take the data, and reset the pieces. Checking their work helps you to make instructional decisions (like moving up or down a level or the need for a review lesson)
