Paraprofessionals are vital to making special education classrooms run smoothly! The amazing paras I know are some of the hardest working staff members with the biggest hearts. As teachers, we can show some para appreciation to paras all year long! Read on for ten simple ways to show paraprofessionals that we care.
Ways to Show Paras Some Love!
Para Survey
At the beginning of the year, I ask the paraprofessionals I work with to fill out this free survey so I can learn more about them. Their answers help me plan little treats throughout the year!
Pitch In
As a teacher, leading by example in the classroom makes a big difference. Tag-teaming difficult students, offering to cover a student so a para can take a break, assisting with diapering… These are little ways that teachers can help out and show that we care about paras.
Celebrate Paraprofessional Appreciation Day
Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is on April 3. A special celebration that day is a meaningful way to honor paras! I love to give out these these free Para Appreciation cards that day!
Notes of Appreciation
Writing a short note to a para expressing that you appreciate all they do is so meaningful!
Be Inclusive
One of the best (and simplest!) ways to show appreciation for paras is by showing respect and including them in the classroom. It is so important to try to include paras in your planning and scheduling so that they can feel prepared and know they are a part of the team. A little communication goes a long way!
Gifts
Gifts are always welcome, and they don’t have to break the bank! I have given out many of these para-themed pencil bags, and they are always a hit. (affiliate link) Or, you can give little gifts that match the para’s interests.
Share Kind Words with Others
Whenever you have a chance, let a para’s supervisor know what a fabulous job they are doing! Compliments have a way of coming back around to the recipient. Taking the time to tell others about a co-worker means a lot!
Advocate
More and more, paraprofessional jobs are under attack. District-based jobs are being cut while more and more responsibilities are being put on paras. Not to mention the fact that paras are massively underpaid! Teachers can advocate for para’s jobs and help protect their livelihoods by addressing these issues with school boards and legislators. Standing up for our colleagues is another way to show them that they matter!
Para Appreciation Luncheon
At the end of each school year, my special education department hosts a para appreciation luncheon. Admin and teachers all chip in to cover a catered lunch and a small token of appreciation. We host the luncheon on one of the half days before school lets out so that we can all eat together, duty-free. It is one of my favorite days of the year because we are able to eat and spend time together without any responsibilities!
Get the Whole School Involved
Paraprofessionals should be a part of the school community, not just known as “so-and-so’s aide.” We can make sure that paras are visible by introducing them to other staff members and students, encouraging them to participate in school activities, and making sure they are aware of things that are happening. When people feel seen, it makes everyone feel more appreciated!
