As I talked about in my last month, I like to use this month to celebrate my students, and teach others to accept them as they are. I think at this point everyone is aware of Autism, but are we teaching others to accept it?
THANK OTHERS FOR THEIR KINDNESS.
It may seem a little backwards, but I truly feel that showing those around the school who are kind to my students each and every day a little love, goes a long way.
Passing out these cards also gives them something to display on their desk or computer, and is an opportunity to practice:
+ signing a card
+ brainstorming ideas (who should we give it to?)
+ Making a list
+ delivering
+ Communication & Social Skills & Greetings… and so much more!
You can grab the cards for free, here.
HOST AN ACCEPTANCE LIBRARY.
Hosting an acceptance library is a great way to encourage general education teachers to teach their students about Autism and differences. It helps spread that feeling of kindness and acceptance around your school- to both staff and students. You can read more about how I set up my library in this post. The resources are free!
PICK A COLOR AND WEAR IT.
I know some people are against “Light it Up Blue”, but to me the real meaning behind it all is just having a day where everyone can come together and wear the same shirt, color, or bracelet. Decorate the school (you can find a free puzzle piece bulletin board template here for free), pass out your thank you cards, wear a shirt that promotes acceptance…. you get the point.
Happy April & Keep Spreading that Kindness, xox
