Our students THRIVE on schedules. Whether they are following a visual schedule with picture supports or a written schedule… when there are cancellations and they need to spend a day at home, or spend an extended period doing at home learning like during the coronavirus outbreak, having a home visual schedule is key.

Teachers, I know you are searching high and low for ways to support your students and their families at this time. Families, I know you are also searching ways to figure out this home learning thing. The ONE THING you need to implement right away is a schedule. Students are used to a consistent schedule at school… and it is no different at home.
Why a visual schedule? You may not use one regularly at home (though, you should!) but home has now made a big shift. We are placing demands on our children that they are not used to. It is not one big break at home right now. We need to be preventing regression and that may involve doing some work or structured activities. You need a home visual schedule to be successful at this.
If your child or students can read or write… they still benefit from a visual schedule. Visual doesn’t have to mean a picture schedule. You can easily write out a morning and afternoon schedule. You can have your child pick activities and make the schedule with you each morning. Lots of choices will be helpful to you!
If you aren’t familiar with a first then board this is a visual that can help get students completing work more quickly and efficiently because they can see the end in sight. A first/ then board shows students what comes next that is motivating!
