Sorting Activities in Special Education

If you don’t know about my file folder passion by now you must be new here! BUT for real, file folders are so versatile, easily accessible, and so easy to make and store! They don’t take up much room at all! I truly do love creating things using folders and teachers tell me they love them too!

I started creating real picture resources last fall, and I have fallen in love with using real pictures in my resources. It’s so important for our students, at any age, to make real world connections and generalizations, and not just to clipart. Plus, clip art and line drawings are really hard to generalize to the real thing.

These real picture sorting activities target a variety of skills, from sorting, to identifying the titles, to find motor and motor planning… the list goes on. I’ve added a variety of topics into this set from life skills to science to give you one to pull for many of things you will teach this year- or just use them all year long!

I also love targeting student interests for independent work, and these file folders touch on a lot of student interests too!

If you have students that aren’t quite ready for sorting independently, these can easily be made into mats, just don’t glue into file folders, and become an errorless learning activity.

How do you make them into an errorless learning activity?

Only give students one mat and all the correct answers at a time. The student puts the pieces on the mat. The student is correct with every answer, building motivation (everyone likes to be correct), confidence, and independence! Huge wins!

If you like sorting mats, check out these sorting file folders that use real pictures, HERE.
