Simply Special Visual Recipe (& a freebie!)

Happy March! This is the toughest month of school there is around here…. no breaks… no days off… just pure school. So I’m surprising you with a freebie of my visual recipes! This is the perfect time to start implementing cooking in the classroom!

Simply Special Ed Shamrock Mix

“But my admin won’t let me cook”… neither would mine.

I pleaded my case and stated the reasons why this skill is important for my life skills Autism classroom. Many parents had concerns about these skills, and kitchen safety, so that also helped my case.

“But I don’t have an oven”…. neither do I.

All 48 recipes that I do throughout the school year are OVEN and STOVE FREE. All you need is  microwave and sometimes a toaster oven or blender… but you could bring those in from home as needed.

“But my school is food free” …. so is mine.

I pleaded my case and supported why my classroom is different, my curriculum is different and why this is at the top of skills I want my students to leave my classroom with.

AND NOW WE COOK 🙂 once or twice a week and we work on so many skills while we do it from counting, to measuring, to labeling, to kitchen safety. My admin LOVES it, the parents LOVE it , and the kids LOVEEEEEE it! It has been so enriching to my classroom.

Want to try it out? This FREE recipe is one of the EASIEST in the pack & is a favorite around the school! (We always have the kids deliver samples to teachers and administration, listing ingredients and steps 🙂

Cooking a HUGE part of my weekly curriculum. My speech path, co-teacher and myself cook every Friday. Parent’s are on board with it and gladly take turns sending supplies in. We use it for so much more than cooking skills. We integrate speech and language skills, math reasoning, sequencing activities and social skills. parent’s have reported back that they have even had their child try new things at home. I am fortunate that my administration has recognized the value that these lessons bring to our autism program, so much so that they ask when we are doing it and often stop in. Thank you for a new recipe to try this month!!
