Halloween is such a fun time of year! But for some of our students holidays can be stressful, overwhelming, and a huge schedule change!
Trick or Treating is definitely one of those times. Because Trick or Treating is a social activity, our students may need to practice before it’s time. Some of our students may not be able to say “trick or treat” or “happy halloween”, and the public may not understand why. When trick or treating with toddlers I’ve even experienced adults holding back candy until the child said it, or until they said please. This is pretty overwhelming for our students who simply cannot do this…. and even more stressful for their parents.
Much like a picture exchange system, these free trick or treat cards are a way for the child to hand something to the person and say trick or treat in their own way, while also spreading understanding.
HOW TO PREPARE: Teachers- print and fill out these cards with your class. Set up a few teachers in your building that are willing to hand out candy or treats to practice trick or treating. and simulate the night! Have the students dress up, knock on the door, and say trick or treat or hand the card depending on their ability. This is a great way to practice.
HOW TO SUPPORT PARENTS: Fill out more cards to send home with the students for them to use on Halloween night with their families!
If you aren’t comfortable putting student names on their card, you can put whatever they are dressing up as, everyone has a different type of neighborhood and comfortability.
